It’s always a bittersweet time of year for us in November because we know that we’ll be closing soon and won’t get to see our many loyal customers in person for a while. But before we close out another successful season at our East Oak Road market, we still have plenty of fresh produce, dairy, breads and even some sweet treats to offer.
As we wrote in our most recent blog about sweet potatoes, these tubers are incredibly versatile (you can bake, boil, roast, fry, or steam them), and you can store them in a dry box in a basement or cool pantry for six to 10 months (under good conditions).
Also in season are apples – Winesap, Granny Smith, and Golden Delicious – all locally grown! Keep apples on the counter and they may last a week, but put them in the fridge and they can last up to 6 weeks. Cut and freeze them now and they’ll keep until springtime.
We still have lots of familiar items you love, plus some that might become your new favorites. It’s a great time to try new things and we are always happy to help with suggestions and ways to prepare and cook them. We love when a customer leaves the market with the ingredients they need for a new dinner idea!
With that in mind, consider cooking with any of the following crops. If you don’t know how, just ask!
- Swiss Chard
- Broccoli Rabe
- Head Broccoli
