Pickling isn’t for just your Grandmother anymore! This hip and trendy way to keep food as a long history, and was originally a way to preserve foods before things like refrigerators were created. (Just think Little House on the Prairie days.) Now, pickling is a great way to not only preserve foods for longer periods of time than refrigeration but also to add unique flavors and textures to your meals. To learn how to pickle and what foods make for pickled goodness, keep reading!
All you’ll need is water, vinegar (you’ll want to get a good quality), sea salt, and your favorite spices. Combine equal parts water and vinegar, add in 2 teaspoons and 2 teaspoons of sea salt, your favorite spices to taste, and bring to a boil. Wait about a minute before pouring over the food that you want to pickle. Let this mixture refrigerate overnight in a bowl covered tightly with plastic wrap. You can store the mix in a mason jar instead for preservation; this will keep your fruits or vegetables preserved for about 6 months.
So get pickling to by visiting us at Muzzarelli Farms Monday through Sunday from 8am to 6pm and pick out your choice of fruits and vegetables to start pickling!
