Kale | Muzzarelli Farms, Vineland, NJ

Kale is an extremely popular leafy green that's part of the Brassica family, which also includes cabbage, broccoli, collard greens, brussel sprouts, and other cruciferous vegetables. This popular superfood is appreciated for its nutritional value and versatility in the kitchen. With its sharp, earthy, and peppery flavor, kale is a popular addition in salads, sautéed, stir fried, baked as chips, fried as fritters, soups, casseroles, blended into smoothies, or juiced with fruit to make green juice.

Muzzarelli Farms has been family owned (now in our fourth generation) and operated since 1937. We grow fruits and vegetables, including one of our most popular vegetables that we truly take pride in: Kale. We grow, pack and sell Green Kale, Curly Kale and Tuscan Kale. We sell kale to retail customers during our growing season, but we also sell kale to our wholesale customers and have the experience and capabilities to build programs for specific packs and specifications of kale if needed.

How Does Muzzarelli Farms Grow Kale?

At Muzzarelli Farms we grow our kale regeneratively in harmony with nature. We know that healthy soil grows healthy plants, which nourish healthy people.

In order for kale to flourish, it requires fertile soil and ample amounts of sunlight. It typically takes between 50-70 days after sowing before being ready for picking. Our kale is field-picked and bunched at the peak of freshness. We are purveyors of fresh! That means hand-picked, delivered fresh. It also means using state-of-the-art harvesting machines and providing food-safety assurance that allows us to maintain consistent product quality for all of our produce, including our kale. Muzzarelli Farms kale is harvested, packed in the field, and rushed to be cooled so it is in peak-quality condition when it arrives at our market. With four generations of experience tending seasonal greens, we know that high-quality growing and production standards yield the highest quality produce.

Muzzarelli Farms Food Safety

Food safety is one of Muzzarelli Farms' top priorities. We stand behind all of the kale we grow and are confident you will be impressed with the quality and taste of our produce. Our goal is to ensure that our Muzzarelli Farms kale is as fresh, delicious and safe as possible by the time it hits your plate.

We grow kale, and all of our fruit and vegetable crops, in accordance with standards set by Primus GFS to ensure our food safety program is comprehensive, effective, and properly implemented. To optimize our crops, audits are performed regularly and include inspections of harvest crews and packing operations onsite at our farm.

Types of Kale We Grow and Sell at Muzzarelli Farms

Green Kale

Fibrous leafy green kale is great for health bowls, salads, and smoothie recipes. Kale far exceeds other leafy greens in vitamins A, C, and K content, and it is said to have a plethora of antioxidants that may reduce the risk of cancer. Kale can be more edible if you steam, fry, bake, and boil it to soften its rugged texture and reduce its naturally bitter and sulfuric flavor profile.

Curly Leafed Kale

Curly kale leaves are the choice for raw salads, hearty bean soups, and green smoothies. The curly leafed kale has bright-green leaves that are sometimes curled so tightly it can be hard to chop them. This kind of kale tends to have a bright, peppery flavor that can become quite bitter.

Tuscan Kale

Tuscan Kale has many names: Dinosaur Kale, Cavolo Nero, and Black Kale. Tuscan Kale has longer, spear-like leaves with a pebbled appearance and a dark, mottled green color. Its flavor is deep, earthy, and with an almost sweet nuttiness. It's also more tender than, and not as bitter as, the curly-leafed variety. The leaves are hearty, making Tuscan Kale a great choice for braising or adding to stews.
